Ground Control

Installation: polypropylene object, helium, 20087

Suspended between the floor and ceiling, this helium-and-oxygen-filled ball reacts to any variation in atmospheric pressure or temperature. You may notice that the number of people in the gallery—and therefore, the amount of body heat being produced—will modify the ball’s movements. It may even follow you or retreat from you in a playful give-and-take.

Edith Dekyndt’s evocative sculpture/installation explores metaphors of both terrestrial and astronomical mapping and navigation as the ball travels around the gallery space.
